HASLETT HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER
BY-LAWS

The Haslett High School Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) was originally chartered in the 1950’s and is one of 20,000 chapters in the United States. The NHS exists under the auspices of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Membership in NHS is by invitation only and the selection procedures shall be determined by the Faculty Council and shall be consistent with the constitution and policies established by the National Council.

  1. FACULTY COUNCIL

    The Faculty Council consists of staff members, plus the NHS advisor(s) who serve as an ex-officio member(s). The Faculty Council meets at least once a year to determine the selection procedure, vote on new members, and consider dismissal, non-selection and warning cases.

  2. MEMBERSHIP

    1. Selection

      1. To be eligible for membership the student must be a junior or senior. Candidates will be notified by invitation in the spring of their sophomore year. Newly qualified candidates will be notified in the spring of their junior year or the fall of their senior year. Candidates will be invited to join only once. Candidates must have been in attendance at this school one semester.
      2. The candidates must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
      3. Selection is based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

    2. Dues: Chapter dues will be set at $20.00 to be collected with Induction paperwork.

    3. Dismissal

      1. Members who fall below the standards, which were the basis for their selection, shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter advisor and given one semester to correct the deficiency; except in the case of flagrant violation of school rules (i.e. school suspension) or civil laws. A member does not necessarily have to be warned.
      2. Any student who does not turn in dues, complete required service hours, participate regularly in NHS meetings and required activities may be dismissed from NHS.
      3. Any student, who is put on probation for the second time in any of one given area, will be required to meet with faculty council to discuss remedies/possible dismissal.
      4. Students with a cumulative grade point average of a 3.5-4.0 on a 4.0 scale are eligible for appeal.

  3. MEETINGS

    1. Information is disseminated through the NHS Facebook and Twitter accounts, School Announcements and the NHS Bulletin board.
    2. The president may call special meetings approved by the executive committee.
    3. Students must attend all meetings and report to the advisors upon request.

  4. ACTIVITIES

    1. The chapter shall determine one mandatory group project with no hours credited that all members shall participate in. (RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE)
    2. Each member shall be responsible for 30 service hours, 20 of which must be completed in the school district. These opportunities are specifically outlined on the Haslett High School website under Clubs/NHS/Volunteer opportunities. Members are expected to check the website for updates to volunteer opportunities and to print off copies of the NHS hours tally sheet and other information.
    3. Individual hours shall fulfill a need in the school or community, have supports of the administration and faculty, be appropriate and educationally defensible, and be well- planned, organized and executed.
    4. Prior approval of individual service activities is necessary from the adviser (s) for those activities not publicized by the chapter on the website.
    5. Service Hour deadline is: before spring break for Seniors (in order to participate in Induction and receive honor cords) and by May 30 for Juniors. The adviser(s) must approve any exceptions to these dates in advance.

  5. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

    1. Application forms shall be available the first day of May of the school year prior to serving. Officers will be required to meet separately with advisors at least monthly to help plan meetings and N.H.S. activities.
    2. Officers and job descriptions of the Executive Committee

      1. President – Responsible for NHS Chapter projects and meetings, agendas and delegating responsibilities
      2. Fall Drive Coordinators (2) – Responsible for coordinating Fall Drive
      3. Blood Drive Coordinators (2) - Responsible for coordinating Blood Drive
      4. Communications Coordinators (2) – Responsible for corresponding, scheduling, taking and posting minutes, public relations announcements, NHS bulletin board and NHS social media sites.
